Humility During The Storms Of Life
Lamentations 3:20 says, “My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.”

Jeremiah, the author of this book (2 Chr 35:25), was expressing his grief and deep sorrow over the terrible sufferings endured by his people when the Babylonians invaded and destroyed Jerusalem. While the enemies were besieging Jerusalem, the prophet was “shut up in the court of the prison” (Jer 32:2), because Israel’s king Zedekiah did not like his prophecy regarding the impending judgment; which became a grim reality! Jeremiah saw great “affliction” (v. 1), pain, suffering, and destruction! He compared it to the bitterness of “gall” (v. 5), and “wormwood” (v. 15).
By having “them still in remembrance,” he expresses firm confidence, faith, and hope; that through his prayers (Lam 5:1), God in His great mercy and compassion (v. 22), would remember His people and save them (Ps 103:8). As God’s children, we also need to realize that we serve “the God of hope” (Rom 15:13), Who always provides us with His unfailing love (Jer 31:3), in the midst of difficult circumstances. Whenever we feel overwhelmed with the pressures and challenges of life (2 Cor 4:8), it is always comforting to know that we have a merciful God (Ps 145:9), Who continually offers grace and forgiveness (1 Jn 1:9).
As Jeremiah was “humbled,” we must also humble ourselves before the Lord (Jms 4:10), and He will meet us when we approach Him (Jms 4:8). His great faithfulness provides us with a fresh start daily (v. 23), encouraging us to extend the same grace to others (1 Pet 4:10). Jeremiah believed that God’s faithfulness enables us to “stand strong” (Ps 30:7), amid the adversities of life, so we can proclaim all praises and glory unto His name (Isa 42:12). When we face the battles and burdens of life, we need to claim the precious promises of our Lord Jesus Christ that He will not leave us “comfortless” (Jn 14:18), and He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb 13:5). Therefore, when the storms and struggles of life are raging, “God is able” (2 Cor 9:8), to carry us safely through! God bless you!
