Follow That Which Is Good
3 John 1:11 says, “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.”

John addressed this epistle to Gaius (v.1), who is known to love and walk “in the truth” (v. 3). But they were also having some internal problems caused by an influential man named Diotrephes (v. 9). He was hurting John’s character “with malicious words” (v. 10). Therefore, John reminded them not to follow “that which is evil, but that which is good!” When we trusted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour by faith (Rom 5:1), we have been invited to embark on a beautiful journey to follow Him (Mt 16:24). We recognized that we cannot direct our own ways (Jer 10:23).
We must now follow His footsteps (Jn 10:27), trust His wonderful plans for our lives (Jer 29:11), and embrace the pathway He has prepared for us (Prov 12:28). We would love His precious word (Ps 19:10), because it is a lamp and light unto our paths (Ps 119:105). We have so many choices in the world today (Col 2:8). Sadly, most people choose to follow that which is evil (1 Cor 6:9), and “the things that are in the world” (1 Jn 2:15), instead of God.
Remember, Satan is the father of lies (Jn 8:44), and a master deceiver (2 Cor 11:14) – he wants people to follow him in the broad way “that leadeth to destruction” (Mt 7:13). But even though the way is narrow and few people find it, God’s way “leadeth unto life” (Mt 7:14); and we must choose to “walk in it” (2 Jn 1:6)! We may face some doubts or fears about what the future holds, but our Lord Jesus promised us that “if we walk in the light, as He is in the light” (1 Jn 1:7), He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb 13:5). When we follow God’s call to step forward in faith (Ps 37:23), our journey in this world shall be filled with great joy, hope, and a godly purpose! God bless you!
