The Power Of The Tongue
James 3:5 says, “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!”

Although “the tongue is a little member” of our bodies, it “boasteth great things” through its power. James used the illustration of large ships, which can be “turned about with a very small helm” (v. 5), that controls the small rudder. So is the power of our tongues. It can either have positive or negative effects; by bringing encouragement, peace, and hope, or causing someone to get hurt, angry, and bitter! A foolish person may “speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health” (Prov 12:18). Nowadays, people whose hearts are bitter (Jer 4:18), and don’t have the courage to speak, utilize the power of social media and AI to do the talking for them!
They realize that numerous people can be easily reached and be contaminated with their exaggerated facts (Col 3:9); which are actually “lies in hypocrisy” (1 Tim 4:2). They misconstrue such facts either to their advantage or the disadvantage of others. Then they further convey their unspoken words by dressing it up with emojis, bold fonts, or caps. This type of subliminal is meant to entice the reader’s sympathy. Sadly, those who “love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Prov 18:21)! When we understand the power that our tongues hold (Mt 12:37), we must be very careful about what we say and what we broadcast through these modern avenues.
People who are guilty of exaggerating a little or being dramatic use this method to try and rationalize their behavior, or even justify their self-pity. But God views it as telling a lie! We should never tolerate this type of sin in our lives to avoid being the devil’s pawn. Can we honestly say that the words we speak are true and accurate? God gave us the words of life (Jn 6:63). We should focus on proclaiming His words to others so they will come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Because life is in the power of the tongue! God bless you!
