Zephaniah's Prophecy

Zephaniah 1:2 says, “I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.”

Zephaniah prophesies during a time that is beyond the invasion and destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar (2 Ki 24:14). His prophecy pertains to the second coming of our Lord Jesus (Rev 19:11); Who will “consume man and beast…the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea” (v. 3). He will destroy or “consume all things from off the land,” because mankind has turned the glorious revelation of God in nature (Jer 2:11), by making an image like man or animals, and calling it a god.

Thereby worshipping and serving “the creature more than the Creator” (Rom 1:25). This proves that faith in evolution (2 Tim 2:23), eventually leads to idolatry (1 Thes 1:9)! God hates idolatry (Ex 20:4)! He will “cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests” (v. 4). These are the priests that were ordained by Jeroboam to sacrifice “unto the calves that he had made” (1 Ki 12:32). When king Jehu reigned, he removed Baal worship “through all Israel” (2 Ki 10:21). Then king Josiah even broke “down the altars of Baalim” (2 Chr 34:4), upon hearing Zephaniah’s prophecy.

However, the people returned to idolatry (Rev 2:14). When Jesus returns, He shall finish the job! He shall destroy “those that have not sought” Him (v. 6). Instead, they became consulters “with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer” (Deut 18:11). God will never tolerate such things. This great slaughter “in the day of the Lord’s wrath” (v. 18), is called the Lord’s “sacrifice” (v. 7)! Sadly, many people today are guilty of having their own little gods. They may not have a physical statue or some kind of “graven image” (Ex 20:4), to which they bow down. But they have some kind of activities, habits or traditions (Col 2:8), that they place ahead of God. This is idolatry, which is sin (1 Jn 5:21). No one deserves our worship more than God Himself! God bless you!
