Doing More Than What's Expected
Philemon 1:21 says, “Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.”

Philemon was one of Paul’s “fellowlabourer” (v. 1), whose servant, Onesimus (v. 10), had stolen from him (v. 18). Offenses caused by others are sad realities of life (Lk 17:1). When God’s children are wronged, we must respond according to biblical principles (Mt 5:44), instead of reacting according to what the world teaches (Rom 12:2). As “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Cor 5:20), we must always protect our testimonies! When others see our Christ-like attitude and response (Mt 5:39), then we glorify God and point lost sinners to our Saviour! Paul had won Onesimus to Christ while they were in prison and has proven to be “profitable” (v. 11).
He now pleads for Philemon to put everything behind and receive him as if he was receiving Paul (v. 17). He had great confidence that Philemon will comply to his request and would “also do more.” After trusting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour by faith (Eph 2:8), we must understand that our new identity in Him (1 Cor 2:16), enables us to do “over and above” (1 Chr 29:3), and to go the extra mile (Mt 5:41). When we recognize that “we are His workmanship” (Eph 2:10), then we can pursue whatever work He has called us to do with confidence (Prov 3:26).
Our identity “in Christ” (2 Cor 5:17), is no longer shaped by our past sins (Php 3:13), but by who God says we are! Thus, we move forward under His guidance and direction (Ps 37:23). Doing more that far exceeds someone else’s expectations is always a blessing. Sadly, many workers today are so lazy (Prov 13:4), and will not lift a finger unless they get paid. Some would only give a half-way descent job instead of something with excellent quality (Col 3:23). Challenges and sacrifice are all part of our growth as bible-believing Christians (2 Pet 3:18). They are essential for us to experience God’s transforming power as He molds us into a masterpiece (Rom 9:21), that reflects His glory! God bless you!
