God First Loved Us
1 John 4:19 says, “We love him, because he first loved us.”

After realizing that God made the first move in loving us (Jn 3:16), “while we were yet sinners” (Rom 5:8), we are drawn to trust Jesus as our Lord and Saviour by faith (Eph 1:12), and to “love Him” as well. After getting saved, we also learn that nothing shall “separate us from the love of God” (Rom 8:39). Because His “everlasting love” (Jer 31:3), is always present! That precious promise causes us to obey Him (Jn 14:15); by loving what He loves and hating “that which is evil” (Rom 12:9)! We are also commanded (v. 21), “to love one another” (v. 11), and maintain or keep ourselves “in the love of God” (Jude 1:21), so we can “grow in grace” (2 Pet 3:18).
A farmer who loves his orchard would ensure that his plants receive constant irrigation, cultivation, and pruning in order for them to become healthy and fruitful. This is God’s desire for all His children (Jn 15:4). He wants us to continually be nourished by His word (2 Tim 2:15); just “like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season” (Ps 1:3). This is the “fruit of the Spirit” (Gal 5:22), which should be manifested in our lives; the first is love! When “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost” (Rom 5:5), it serves as a living testimony for others to see (2 Cor 3:3).
Even though we may experience some pain, troubles, and difficulties in life; God’s love provides hope, comfort (Ps 147:3), and His peace “which passeth all understanding” (Php 4:7). We can begin to heal from past hurts and embrace a brighter future, by leaning on His “everlasting arms” (Deut 33:27). Because He alone can mend even the most broken areas of our lives (Jer 30:17). His great love (Eph 2:4), allows us to experience a renewed sense of purpose. We will no longer be afraid of the uncertainties of tomorrow (Isa 41:10), because “perfect love casteth out fear” (v. 18)! God bless you!
