Seek God, Because He Is Good

Amos 5:14 says, “Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.”

We must always “seek the Lord” (1 Chr 16:11), because He is the source of “every good gift and every perfect gift” (Jms 1:17). He is also “abundant in goodness and truth” (Ex 34:6)! He is good to us, not because we are good (Rom 3:12), but because He is good all the time (Lk 18:19)! He is good to give us life (Acts 17:25), and He delights in doing good (Ps 31:19). He is good to us even “when we were enemies” (Rom 5:10), by reconciling us through Jesus (2 Cor 5:18). But as good as anyone can be, without humbly trusting Jesus as their Lord and Saviour by faith (Acts 16:31), they will not have eternal life (Jn 3:36).

They must realize that “the goodness of God” (Rom 2:4), leads to repentance! However, we must never take advantage of God’s goodness, just like what the Jews did after He led them to conquer the promised land (Ex 13:5) – they became disobedient and rebellious (Neh 9:26). They also soon forgot His mighty works (Ps 106:13). In the past years of our ministry, we saw some folks who took advantage of our goodness to them. We led them to Christ and taught them to grow spiritually. We even recommended them to people that helped in getting their lives financially stable.

Yet, they turned around and tried to slander our church; they forgot all the goodness that were done to them! We must never let mercy and truth to forsake us (Prov 3:3). By continually seeking good, we are giving God the opportunity to give us the guidance (Ps 25:4), the provision (Php 4:19), and the wisdom that we need daily (Mt 6:11). We become more aware of His goodness to us and we learn to appreciate His answers to our prayers “according to His will” (1 Jn 5:14). Instead of magnifying what went wrong when things go wrong, let’s not forget that God is still good! God bless you!
