Sin Is Breaking God's Law

Melito Barrera • October 17, 2024

Hebrews 10:26 says, “For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,”

Sin is breaking God’s law (1 Jn 3:4), and coming “short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23). Those who “know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thes 1:8), will earn their wages; which is the second death “into the lake of fire” (Rev 20:14)! But God’s free gift to those who trust Him by faith (Eph 2:8), “is eternal life” (Rom 6:23). He “washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Rev 1:5), to save us from “hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched” (Mk 9:45)! Our personal relationship to Jesus is unchanging (Jms 1:17), and secured eternally (Jn 10:28), the moment we are “born again” (Jn 3:5), into the family of God.

However, as God’s children (Jn 1:12), we still have the capacity to sin (1 Jn 1:8). There is no such thing as sinless perfection while we are still living here on earth. Because there will always be a constant struggle between our flesh and the Spirit (Gal 5:17). Our perfection and righteousness are now in Jesus (1 Cor 1:30). The willful sinning in our passage is not referring to sin in general, but to one particular sin that is unholy; which is counting “the blood of the covenant” (v. 29). It means to deny that salvation is only through the blood of Jesus and His grace alone! During that time, most Jews who professed their faith in Jesus were still trying to return to their religion.

Thereby, casting away their “confidence” (v. 35), in Jesus. Man made religion have always tried to replace God’s only salvation plan (Jn 14:6); by adding their own tradition, and philosophy (Col 2:8), to the finished work of Christ on the cross (Jn 19:30)! If we mix our own “works of righteousness” (Titus 3:5), with God’s grace, then it “is no more grace” (Rom 11:6). Salvation is only by God’s grace alone through faith in Jesus alone! God bless you!
