The Lord's Controversy
Micah 6:2 says, “Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.”

The “Lord’s controversy” or dispute was voiced against the nation Israel just before she was forcefully driven out of their land and into captivity by “the king of the Chaldees” (2 Chr 36:17). God showed them “what is good” (v. 8), and what He requires of them; which is simply to walk humbly with Him. Instead, they continued to break His law by allowing “graven images” (Mic 1:7), and immorality to pollute their land! The prophet Micah called upon the “mountains” and the “strong foundations of the earth” as powerful imagery in witnessing God’s controversy with His people. Mountains are often used to picture the strength (Ps 125:2), and the presence of God (Ex 15:17).
Foundations signify stability – He is our rock and fortress, whereunto we “may continually resort” (Ps 71:3). God’s unchanging nature and steadfastness cannot be altered (Mal 3:6)! Micah uses the two pictures to draw attention to the seriousness of Israel’s condition and to show God’s majesty, justice, and divine authority over them. He promises blessings if they obey (Deut 28:2), but there will be serious consequences if they disobeyed (Deut 28:15)! God Himself pleads with Israel to address their transgressions so they can turn back to Him. He reminds them of His goodness in bringing them “out of the land of Egypt” (v. 4), and warns them about His impending judgment (v. 13).
He is a God Who will not overlook sin and injustice; because “just and right is He” (Deut 32:4). As God’s children, He expects us to remain faithful to Him as He is always faithful to us (Deut 7:9). When we stray away from the “will of God” (Rom 12:2), and from the paths that He is directing us (Prov 3:6), then it can lead so some painful outcomes that may even affect our loved ones (Rom 2:6). Micah’s warning is also a call for us today to repent and humbly obey the Lord’s commands! God bless you!
