Caleb Had Another Spirit With Him

Numbers 14:24 says, “But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.”

There are only “eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea” (Deut 1:2). God allowed the people their desire of searching out the land first (Deut 1:22), by commanding Moses to send twelve men “to spy out the land of Canaan” (Num 13:17). Sadly, ten of the twelve spies brought “an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel” (Num 13:32). Their unbelief resulted in God’s judgment by having the people to “wander in the wilderness forty years” (v. 33)!

Those who are twenty years old and older died in the wilderness without having the privilege to enter the promised land (v. 29). Since Caleb and Joshua were the only two of the twelve spies who were determined to go forward and obey God’s command (v. 6), they both survived and saw the promised land! We are told that Caleb “had another spirit with him.” I believe that the Lord is speaking of the same spirit that He gives every bible-believing Christian – not “the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Tim 1:7).

Caleb was never afraid, because he knew that God was with him when he encouraged the people to “go up at once, and possess it” (Num 13:30). God’s children should never be afraid because He is always with us (Isa 41:10). We need to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might” (Eph 6:10). As Caleb recognized the urgency of the situation, we also need to realize that salvation is an emergency for many who are still living lost in their sins (Jn 3:19). Caleb was 85 years old when Joshua blessed him with his portion of the promised land (Josh 14:13). He remained faithful and trusting God in everything. Let’s be like Caleb, by not allowing fear to paralyze our faith! God bless you!
