Loving Both The Brethren And Strangers
3 John 1:5 says, “Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;”

John addressed this letter to his dear friend Gaius (v. 1), a man who was faithfully serving the Lord. He was being encouraged to walk “in the truth” (v. 3) and to “follow not that which is evil, but that which is good” (v. 11). John was also telling him to practice love and hospitality (Rom 12:13), both “to the brethren, and to strangers.” As “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Cor 5:20), we should reflect such Christ-like qualities to everyone, including the unbelieving folks; so that we can win them with the gospel (Acts 8:25). We are to shine as lights in this “crooked and perverse nation” (Php 2:15).
Reaching out to strangers is often a big challenge, especially those who are hostile to our Christian faith. But our Lord Jesus commanded us to “do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Mt 5:44). Because real and compassionate love knows no boundaries (1 Cor 16:14)! It may require some sacrifice or even discomfort on our part (Prov 25:21). However, our willingness to take action by expressing kindness and grace (Rom 12:20), would surely make “a difference” (Jude 1:22), in someone’s life – regardless of their background or circumstances.
This is manifested through our hospitality with strangers, helping the homeless in our community, showing kindness to people that we meet every day, or by simply going out door to door during our soulwinning ministry (Prov 11:30). The adverb “faithfully” reminds us that these actions are not to be done at random or only when it is convenient for us (Php 4:13). But it should be a part of our lifestyle, which emphasizes our love for God, when we show His love to others (Mt 25:40). Such acts of loving service are indeed a reflection of God’s amazing grace when He calls us to be salty Christians in this lost world (Mt 5:13)! May we always live out this love in action, not only to our brethren but to strangers alike! God bless you!
