Everything Belongs To God
Haggai 2:8 says, “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.”

Haggai prophesied during the time when the children of Israel just returned from their Babylonian exile (Ezra 2:1). During their task of rebuilding “the house of the Lord” (Hag 1:14), they found themselves in the midst of financial troubles and uncertainties. But God made an assuring proclamation of His sovereignty (Ps 115:3), over all the resources on earth. Although they may feel powerless and lacking, everything belongs to Him (Ps 24:1), including all “the silver” and all “the gold” in the entire universe (Job 41:11)!
Most people today view their riches and material possessions as the result of their personal hard work, good education, or wise financial planning (Prov 23:4). While we may have a role in acquiring wealth, we must also recognize that the true source of all riches is “the living God” (1 Tim 6:17). When we acknowledge this truth, it encourages us to fully trust in His provisions (Php 4:19). However, this promise is conditional upon our obedience (Jn 14:15), and if it is “according to His will” (1 Jn 5:14). When we honor Him and do what He says (Ps 37:23), then He will always take care of us (Lk 6:38), and also use us to be a channel of blessing to others (2 Cor 9:5)! Since God is the owner and builder of “all things” (Heb 3:4), then we can simply view ourselves as the stewards or managers of all our assets (1 Cor 4:2).
We will no longer look at everything that we possess just for our own pleasure (Rom 8:12), but are resources to be used for God’s glory and honor (Col 3:17)! Therefore, we must learn to put God first in everything (Mt 6:33), so He can guide us in all our financial decisions; wisely, generously, and joyfully (2 Cor 9:7). This can be accomplished by supporting our local church and its ministries for the advancement of the gospel (Acts 1:8). Haggai encourages us to trust God as our great provider, Who needs to be continually praised and glorified! God bless you!
