Run To God
Jonah 1:4 says, “But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.”

God gave Jonah a clear and specific command to go to Nineveh (v. 2), to preach unto them His judgment (Jon 3:2). But Jonah disobeyed God by taking a ship “unto Tarshish” (v. 3b). He thought that he could escape God’s all-seeing eye (Prov 15:3), by running away from Him. However, no one can flee from God’s presence (Ps 139:7)!
Jonah began to experience the terrible consequences of his disobedience when “the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea.” He thought that he could just simply walk away and go against God’s will. Instead, Jonah began to experience a downward spiral; from going “down to Joppa” (v. 3a), to going down “into the sea” (v. 15). His proud and arrogant spirit brought him low (Prov 29:23). If only he had humbly followed God’s plan in the first place (Ps 37:23), then he would have been lifted up (Jms 4:10). His godly testimony would not have been damaged before those mariners; who had to battle the storm and had to “cast forth” (v. 5), their merchandise!
Sadly, there are many professing believers today who are just like Jonah. They would only serve God if it’s convenient for them (Rom 1:28). They would rather pursue worldly riches and pleasures (Mt 6:19), instead of committing their ways unto the Lord (Ps 37:5). As God’s children, He always has a way of getting our attention (Jer 29:11), when we try to choose our own ways over His plans. It is a hard path that is full of trials and discouragements (Prov 13:15). Our ruined testimonies can also affect the people around us (1 Cor 8:9). Our loved ones, including the innocent ones, may even suffer because of our sins (Josh 7:24). But the purpose of God’s loving chastisement (Heb 12:6), is to get us in absolute submission to His will for our lives. So, instead of running away from Him, let’s run to Him! God bless you!
