Show No Favoritism
Genesis 37:3 says, “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.”

Jacob’s name was changed by God to “Israel;” it means having “power with God and with men, and hast prevailed” (Gen 32:28). But it seems clear that he was guilty of favoritism by loving “Joseph more than all his children.” Jacob grew up in a home where favoritism was prevalent; “Isaac loved Esau…but Rebekah loved Jacob” (Gen 25:28). This blatant show of partiality brought envy, strife, and trouble in their home; even throughout many generations (Eze 35:15).
Parents that have more than one child should always treat them as equal as possible (Prov 24:23), and avoid favoring one child above another! Jacob favored Joseph more than his other children “because he was the son of his old age,” from his favorite wife Raechel (Gen 30:25). The ”coat of many colours” pictures Joseph as his father’s choice to be the next leader of the family. This caused a lot of hatred and discontent among his brothers (v. 4). As time went by, Joseph earned the respect of his father and he was given more responsibility within the family. His brothers became more envious of him (v. 11).
When we live a life of holiness and integrity (Ps 26:11), God notices it (Prov 15:3)! When we are faithful in a few things as we serve Him, He gives us more opportunities “over many things” (Mt 25:21). Because they that are “faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much” (Lk 16:10). However, when God promotes us, we should never think of ourselves more highly than we “ought to think” (Rom 12:3). It is purely by God’s grace as He works in our lives to grow us (2 Pet 3:18)! We should neither compare ourselves to others (Gal 6:4), nor become envious because of their achievements (1 Cor 3:3). Instead, we should lovingly respond by being both content (Heb 13:5), and always thankful (1 Thes 5:18), for what the Lord is doing in their lives! God bless you!
