Stephen The Memorial Martyr
Acts 7:59 says, “And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

Memorial Day is a sacred time for us to focus on the price of freedom, by remembering the courageous men and women who gave their lives in the service to our nation. As bible-believing Christians, we look upon their brave examples and honor their memories of purpose and commitment. It causes us to also remember the bravery of countless Christians who were martyred “for the faith of the gospel” (Php 1:27). Their willing sacrifices were instrumental in spreading the gospel to “the regions beyond” (2 Cor 10:16). The very first of those martyrs is Stephen, a “man full of faith” (Acts 6:5), and was committed to following the Lord.
He gave a narrative of Israel’s history, by emphasizing God’s faithfulness and Israel’s disobedience. He started with the call of Abraham (v. 2-8), Joseph being sold into slavery (v. 9-16), Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt (v. 17-43), the tabernacle and the temple (v. 44-50), and ended with his sharp rebuke of the council (v. 51-53). This caused them to drag Stephen “out of the city, and stoned him” (v. 58), to death! He gave his life for the truth of the gospel. But even at the point of death, he still prayed for those who were attacking him (v. 60).
Just like our Lord Jesus (Lk 23:34), Who gave His life to give us our eternal freedom (Jn 15:13). We always remember His great sacrifice (Heb 10:12), and amazing grace (Eph 2:8), whenever we commemorate the ordinance of the Lord’s supper (1 Cor 11:25). We must never forget the wonderful blessings that we enjoy because of someone’s sacrifice (Ps 103:2). God always remembers our acts of service and “labour of love” (Heb 6:10). This Memorial Day, may we not only remember our fallen heroes, but also reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice of our Lord Jesus on Calvary’s cross (Mt 26:28). May we also be inspired to live selfless and godly lives to honor our Saviour and those who laid down their lives for our national freedom! God bless you!
