Knowing God Deeper

Exodus 33:18 says, “And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.”

God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt to the promised land of Canaan (Ex 3:10). It was a very difficult task that was filled with many challenges from his followers that often questioned his leadership and disobeyed orders (Num 14:27). His duty required complete obedience and faithfulness to the Lord (Ex 7:6). When Moses went up to Mount Sinai to receive the law and commandments from God (Ex 24:12), the people became impatient (Ex 32:1). So, they rebelled against God by making an idol of “molten calf” (Ex 32:8), and worshipping it. As a result, the Lord’s wrath was waxed hot and wanted to destroy them!

This situation greatly troubled Moses. He has done his best to lead them and to follow God’s guidance. But all the people did was complain, find fault, and “hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord” (Ps 106:25). Moses could have just thrown in the towel and quit! Instead, he beseeched God to show him His glory. He remained “stedfast in His covenant” (Ps 78:37), and had a heart to know God in a deeper way. Moses knew that merely working on his leadership skills and speech impediment (Ex 4:10), would not satisfy the needs of those rebellious and ungrateful people. He knows that the best solution for his dilemma and discouragement is a fresh glimpse of knowing Who God is.

He wanted to know God’s way that he may have a deeper understanding of Him (v. 13). He also wanted a clearer manifestation of God in His “presence” (v. 15), so he can better follow His leadership (Prov 16:9). Moses seeks to know God better so he can love Him deeper. Moses was not just looking for facts, he was looking to strengthen his faith (Heb 11:24)! Paul had the same desire in his life (Php 3:10). As bible-believing Christians, may we also have that same desire in our hearts to know God better (Jer 9:24); to increase our love for Him (1 Thes 3:12), so we can serve Him more! God bless you!
