His Banner Over Me Was Love
Song of Solomon 2:4 says, “He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.”

Solomon’s expression of his deep love to his bride is a wonderful picture of Christ’s love for His bride, the church (Eph 5:25). Solomon showed that love and affection for his Shulamite bride (Song 6:13), by bringing her “to the banqueting house,” in front of many guests for a prestigious royal banquet! One day, the bride of Christ will be presented as “a glorious church” (Eph 5:27), in the greatest banquet of all time that is called “the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Rev 19:9)! Solomon’s display of love to his bride was evident, just like an army of soldiers bearing their standard or “banner.” Husbands, do your wives know the love that you have for them? Are you showing the banner of love over your wife? She needs the assurance and security that comes from knowing she is loved as your “own bodies” (Eph 5:28).
When I trusted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour by faith (Rom 5:1), I submitted to His will (1 Pet 5:6), because I know how much He loves me (Jer 31:3), unconditionally! My response to His amazing love is my humble submission to Him (Jms 4:7). Men, your wife will follow your lead if she knows how much you love her with every fiber of your being! In our passage, Solomon is still in the courtship phase with the Shulamite woman. She desires to be with him in marital intimacy (v. 6), but she knows it is not yet time.
Part of a man’s banner of love over a woman is his promise to keep each other pure and not to place her in any compromising situation until they are married (1 Thes 4:3). He knows that she is vulnerable – he must protect and honor her until they are wed (Heb 13:4). Fornication is a sin (Eph 5:3)! Godly men must spread their banner of love over a woman to protect her honor. It proves that you truly love her and that you will be faithfully committed to her! God bless you!
