Servant Leadership

Nehemiah 5:9 says, “Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?”

Nehemiah led his people through an overwhelming task of rebuilding the walls of the city of Jerusalem (Neh 4:6). It was a very difficult and backbreaking work for everyone involved. Notwithstanding the oppositions that they had to face from their enemies who conspired against them so their work in progress can be stopped (Neh 4:8)! But it was a fortification that was necessary if they were to deter any external attacks from hostile forces. Nehemiah was able to overcome all the challenges and hurdles they faced because he walked “in the fear of our God.” He was a man who always humbly submitted to God in prayers (Neh 1:4).

Godly leadership is more than just being in charge; it is about being a God-fearing man (Prov 9:10), who guides his followers along the right path (Ex 33:13), as he follows Christ (1 Cor 11:1)! This kind of leadership is rooted in service (Mk 10:44). Thus, a servant leader follows the great example of our Lord Jesus (Jn 13:15); Who prioritized the needs of others (Mt 20:28), and “made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant” (Php 2:7). Nehemiah did not just supervise and gave direct orders (Neh 2:17), but he himself was part of the working crew (v. 16). This is what true servant leadership is all about.

They don’t seek power or being an authoritarian (Rom 12:3). Instead, they strive to encourage their followers by serving with humility (Prov 22:4). Their effectiveness stems from a complete reliance upon the Lord’s guidance (1 Thes 3:11), and a desire to love and support fellow believers in Christ (1 Jn 4:7). Nehemiah and the people of God completed the wall (Neh 7:1), because they did not quit. God’s work is too great to abandon. Bible-believing Christians must embrace this role of servant leadership; and by standing firm as ambassadors of Christ’s love (2 Cor 5:14)! God bless you!
