When Small Things Are Made Big
John 6:9 says, “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”

Jesus showed great compassion upon the “great multitude” (v. 2), by asking Philip where they can buy bread (v. 5); knowing that He has the power to feed them (Isa 55:1). In Philip’s perspective, it was impossible with the resources that they have (v. 7). But to God, it was merely an opportunity to demonstrate His power and His ability to overcome any problems in all situations. Because “the things which are impossible with men are possible with God” (Lk 18:27)! He already knows what we are facing daily (Prov 15:3), and He knows how to handle the situation beforehand (v. 6).
It is comforting to know that we can take all our burdens and cast it upon Jesus (1 Pet 5:7) – He “is able” (2 Cor 9:8), to handle them all! He just wants His children to live by faith (Heb 11:6). In retrospect, Philip’s response was focused on what their money could not afford (v. 7), while Andrew’s response centered around what they could not do. The other disciples even want to get rid of the problem by sending “them away” (Mk 6:36). When faced with similar situations, we should never follow our hearts or our flesh (Jer 17:9). Whether it is sickness, financial troubles, or broken relationships, God allows such circumstances for a reason (Rom 8:28).
When we trust in Him (Prov 3:5), then He always has a way in making the impossible possible and defying all odds (Php 4:13). He does not want our excuses, our questions, and our doubts (2 Tim 1:7). He just wants our faith! God is able to use the little things like the “five barley loaves, and two small fishes,” to make it big in His hands and use it for His glory (Ps 34:3). He wants us to get involved. It is never the size of the gift, but the heart of the giver. When we let go and let God (Eph 3:20), He has a way of multiplying it! God bless you!
